The “little things”

As you might know, the head of a
company survived 9/11 because his son started
kindergarten.

Another fellow was alive because it was his turn to bring donuts.

One woman was late because her alarm clock didn’t go off on time.

One was late because of being stuck on
the NJ Turnpike because of an auto accident.

One of them missed his bus.

One spilled food on her clothes and had to take
time to change.

One’s car wouldn’t start.

One went back to answer the telephone.

One had a child that dawdled and didn’t get ready as soon as he should have.

One couldn’t get a taxi.

The one that struck me was the man
who put on a new pair of shoes that morning,
took the various means to get to work
but before he got there, he developed a blister on his foot.

He stopped at a drugstore to buy a Band-Aid.

That is why he is alive today.

Now, when I am stuck in traffic, miss an elevator, turn back to answer a ringing
telephone…

all the little things that annoy me,
I think to myself, this is exactly where God wants me to be at this very moment.

Next time your morning seems to be going wrong:
the children are slow getting dressed,
you can’t seem to find the car keys,
you hit every traffic light, don’t get mad or
frustrated:

God is at work watching over you.

May God continue to bless you with all those annoying little things and may you remember their
possible purpose.

The Guys’ Rules

At last a guy has taken the time to write this all
down. Finally, the guys’ side of the story.

We always hear “the rules” from the female side. Now here are the rules from the male side. These are our rules! Please note… these are all
numbered “1″ ON PURPOSE!

1. Learn to work the toilet seat. You’re a big girl. If it’s up, put it down. We need it up, you need it down. You don’t hear us complaining about you leaving it down.

1. Sunday sports. It’s like the full moon or the
changing of the tides. Let it be.

1. Shopping is NOT a sport. And no, we are never
going to think of it that way.

1. Crying is blackmail.

1. Ask for what you want. Let us be clear on this
one: Subtle hints do not work!
Strong hints do not work!
Obvious hints do not work!
Just say it!

1. Yes and No are perfectly acceptable answers to
almost every question.

1. Come to us with a problem only if you want help
solving it. That’s what we do. Sympathy is what your girlfriends are for.

1. A headache that lasts for 17 months is a problem. See a doctor.

1. Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument. In fact, all comments become null and void after 7 days.

1. If you won’t dress like the Victoria’s Secret
girls, don’t expect us to act like soap opera guys.

1. If something we said can be interpreted two ways and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, we meant the other one.

1. You can either ask us to do something or tell us how you want it done. Not both. If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself.

1. Whenever possible, please say whatever you have
to say during commercials.

1. Christopher Columbus did not need directions and neither do we.

1. ALL men see in only 16 colors, like Windows
default settings. Peach, for example, is a fruit, not a color. Pumpkin is also a fruit. We have
no idea what mauve is.

1. If it itches, it will be scratched. We do that.

1. If we ask what is wrong and you say nothing,”
we will act like nothing’s wrong. We know you are
lying, but it is just not worth the hassle.

1. If you ask a question you don’t want an answer
to, expect an answer you don’t want to hear.

1. When we have to go somewhere, absolutely anything you wear is fine.. Really.

1. Don’t ask us what we’re thinking about unless you are prepared to discuss such topics as sports, the weather, or hunting.

1. You have enough clothes.

1. You have too many shoes.

1. I am in shape. Round is a shape.

1. Thank you for reading this. Yes, I know, I have
to sleep on the couch tonight; but did you know men really don’t mind that? It’s like camping.

Poetry Tips

For these tips and more, please visit www.poetryamerica.com

Write poetry about people that have touched you, objects you love, memories and places. Use your five senses and even your sixth sense.

————————————————————–
Be yourself when you are writing poetry, explore your different sides through poetry, the facets of your personality.

————————————————————–
Be like a diamond, having many facets making up a whole full of sparkling endeavors.

————————————————————–
Get silent and breathe before you begin, being tranquil will make it easier to write.

————————————————————–
Enlarge your vocabulary, look through dictionaries and books to increase your vocabulary and use those words in a poem.

Think about what you are trying to express but don’t do it with literal intentions, use symbols, metaphors and descriptions.

————————————————————–
Most of all have fun, strong feelings of any kind will enhance your true nature and you will find it easier to express it through your poetry.

————————————————————–
Be happy writing poetry, this is your time to expand and write whatever comes into your mind.

————————————————————–
Write to the world or write poetry to someone special.

————————————————————–
Don’t be shy.

————————————————————–
Give thanks for life, reward it with a poem.

————————————————————–
Submit your poems. Sooner or later you have to send your babies out into the world to find their way. Emily Dickinson was a fluke, most people who don’t publish while they’re alive will never be seen or heard of — no matter how good their poems.

————————————————————–
Say what you want to say, let the reader decide what it means.

————————————————————–
Don’t explain EVERYTHING.

————————————————————–
Poems that focus on form (Sonnet, Villanelle, etc.) are a challenge. They make you think.

————————————————————–
People will remember an image long after they’ve forgotten why it was there.

————————————————————–
If you write a bad poem, at least you wrote.

————————————————————–
Develop your voice. Get comfortable with how YOU write poetry.

————————————————————–
Don’t be afraid to write poetry from a different point of view. Write a poem that says exactly the opposite of what you believe, and do it without irony.

————————————————————–
Untitled poems are lazy. They’re like unnamed children. Obviously their parent doesn’t care about them.

————————————————————–
Write in different places. Keep a notebook. Write in a park or on a street-corner or in an alley. You don’t HAVE to write about the place, but it will influence you whether you do or not.

————————————————————–
Listen to talk radio while you write. Listen to the people who call. Great characters and voices emerge that way.

————————————————————–
If you don’t like a poem or poet, figure out exactly why. Chances are, it reflects something you don’t like about your own poetry.

————————————————————–
When nothing is coming, start writing poetry very fast– any word, phrase or sentence that comes to mind. Do that for about a minute, then go back to your poem. (I call this flushing.) Whether to use anything you flushed is up to you. You can, but that’s not the purpose.

————————————————————–
The more you read, the more you learn. The more you write poetry, the more you develop.

————————————————————–
Make a list of poems you can remember specific lines from. Go back and read those poems. Figure out why they stuck with you.

————————————————————–
There are many excuses not to write. Try using writing poetry as an excuse not to do other things.

————————————————————–
Keep a dream journal. Dreams are your mind at it’s most creative so listen to it. Don’t feel you have to write a poem ABOUT your dreams. If you want to, fine, but the main goal is to see what thoughts the dreams lead you to.

————————————————————–
Subscribe to poetry journals. Give back to the poetry community by reading (and paying for) the works of others. If you don’t, what right have you to expect others to do it for you?

————————————————————–
When nothing is coming for you, try analyzing someone else’ s poems. (Or even one of yours) Figure out what works, what doesn’t work, and why. Think about what you would have done differently.

————————————————————–
Use humor, irony, and melodrama, just don’t abuse them.

————————————————————–
Write the worst poem you can possibly write. Use cliché’s, pretentious words, and beat your reader over the head with your point. Felt good, didn’t it? Now get back to work. The point is, don’t be afraid to write a bad poem. If it takes a hundred bad poems before you can produce a poem you like, fine, get that hundred out of the way.

————————————————————————

That one perfect line in a twenty line poem may be what makes it all worthwhile, or it may be what makes the rest of the poem bad. Keep an eye on it.

————————————————————–
Every great poet has written a bad poem, probably dozens or hundreds, possibly thousands. They kept writing though, and so should you.

————————————————————–
Every line of a poem should be important to the poem, and interesting to read. A poem with only 3 great lines should be 3 lines long.

————————————————————–
Poems should progress. There should be a reason why the first stanza comes before the second, the second before the third, and so on.

————————————————————–
Listen to criticism, and try to learn from it, but don’t live or die by it.

————————————————————–
When you write a good poem, one you really like, immediately write another. Maybe that one poem was your peak for the night or maybe you’re on a roll. There’s only one way to find out.

————————————————————–
Follow your fear. Don’t back away from subjects that make you uncomfortable, and don’t try to keep your personal demons off the page. Even if you never publish the poems they produce, you have to push yourself and write as honestly as possible.

————————————————————–
The bigger your point, the more important the details are.

Raw Cheese

Sometime there will come a day
When no one has anything good to say
And there will be nothing to do
But eat raw cheese of the color bleu

There is no place to go
No where they won’t know
Except the side door of your local grocery store
Where you can get Gouda, Swiss, Muenster and more

What is it about raw cheese?
It makes you beg for more and say please
But not everyone likes to eat it
Unless you cook it or reheat it

Slump

the night falls dark
and I am again alone
my destiny is chosen
another chance I have blown

not knowing how to handle it
fear took full control
running from this moment
enslaving my lost soul

don’t let it be my future
it’s nothing but the unknown
daylight will awaken
and I will have grown

what I might have become
is a being crawling from a hole
like a dark blind creature
an insatiable silent mole

slowly building confidence
my life is not yet sewn
I will show everyone
what I have always known

an unstoppable force I must awaken
I have paid my toll
its time to come alive
to become one as a whole.

Whispers Filtered From My Head

This is one of the best poems I’ve ever read and am proud to display it on Christina’s Corner!

its nearing dusk in the sky as the cool rain pours.
and the thunder crashes with the slam of a hundred doors
the whipping wind is chilling our precipitation soaked skin
the tree branches are with in grasp, reaching for our every sin
devouring all but the electrical cloud charged light
night takes over with out the slightest fight
now that the sun is a distant passing thought
I found the courage that I so desperately sought
I take your small, ever so smooth hands in mine
pull you closer to me so our lips are in line
a whisper of words filters from my head
from my mouth, I wished this is what I said
I’ll love you forever. I see stars in your eyes
even when the darkness has fallen over the night sky’s
your voice is a melody accompanied by the orchestra of thunder
how I lived with out you I will always wonder
your motion calms the strongest winds blowing
with the grace of a woman all knowing
and with that you press up against my lips
kissing me softly caressing with out stretched finger tips
our tongues intertwine together
dancing with anticipation wishing for forever
and tomorrow you are gone
leaving nothing but a trace of an unforgiving love song
these were the words I have never said
just whispers filtered from my head

Dear God

Dear God,

Today is September 11, 2005. This will mark the fourth year since the attack on the World Trade Center.

I know over 3,000 innocent people died, however, so many more have died since then.

I also know that if anyone had to die and I was one of those people, I would want the death toll to stop with me.

Dear God

Dear God,

As you know, Hurricane Katrina recently slammed into the Gulf Coast. I’ve seen stories on the news and read articles on the internet about rapes and killings. Honestly God, who would think of raping or killing someone at a time like this?

Isn’t it enough that women and men are having to pull their dead infants out of the water?

When is enough REALLY enough?

Reservoir of Strength

When individuals experience difficult times, they often find that they possess a previously undiscovered reservoir of strength. In ancient Vedic texts, the third, or Manipura chakra (when healthy) is the seat of that strength, bolstering courage and determination in times of stress and uncertainty. This chakra radiates from the base of the sternum, governing our emotions, will, and ego. When balanced, it blesses one with a profound drive to succeed, authority, integrity, and self-respect. It is active, rather than passive, and helps in the achievement of tasks both great and small. The Manipura chakra may be visualized as a bright, cheerful yellow and is associated with the sunflower and amber.

Because of its connection to the ego, when the third chakra is in a depleted state, it is common to experience feelings of inadequacy, doubt, and rejection; depression and lethargy; and intense worry. Too much energy focused in the area leads to the desire to exert inappropriate control over one’s environment. A well-developed Manipura chakra empowers you to grow in positive ways and inspires you to act on your desires. It is possible to exert a balancing influence over the chakra by bringing fire into your life in the form of candles or hearth fires, wearing yellow clothing, and doing exercises that strengthen the muscles of the abdomen and teach you to breath deeply using the diaphragm. You can stimulate an under-active third chakra by burning cinnamon or carnation incense, using peppermint or lemon essential oils and Ginkgo biloba or milk thistle, and exposing the chakra to tiger-eye. The simplest and most potent method of opening and energizing the chakra is relaxing you! r emotional center. Laugh and cry more often, let yourself be more sensitive, and embrace your raw emotions.

Living with a repressed Manipura chakra is like existing automatically, without vitality. Its qualities can be the cause of overwork and excessive perfectionism, but this chakra is more often the seat of free will, goals, personal power, and decisiveness. When nurtured, it can lead you to new heights of spirituality and balance in all aspects of your life.
